The Toyota Motor Corporation presented Continental, the international automotive supplier, with its Annual Technology & Development Award in recognition of its development contribution towards Toyota’s active safety package “Toyota Safety Sense C”.
This active safety package combines innovative safety technologies Pre-Collision System (PCS), Lane Departure Alert (LDA), and Auto High Beams (AHB) to help assist the driver. By working together, the systems help address three key areas of accident protection: preventing or mitigating frontal collisions, keeping drivers within their lane, and enhancing road safety during night-time driving.
Continental received the award for the development of the Multi-Function Camera with Lidar (MFL) which integrates a camera and an infrared Lidar (Light Detection and Ranging Sensor) into a single compact unit.
This sensor module is able to detect objects ahead of the vehicle, and when there is a possibility of collision it prompts the driver to brake with an audio and visual alert. If the driver fails to brake in time, the system automatically applies the brakes. In addition to this PCS, MFL is contributing to realizing other active safety functions like LDA and the AHB in the Toyota ‘C-Package’. Continental supplies this sensor module for more than ten Toyota models worldwide.
