McLaren Automotive will add 250 jobs and a second shift as demand for its supercars grows. The U.K. company expects to sell 3,000 cars this year, up from 1,653 last year, helped by strong orders for its entry-level Sport Series cars.
The Sports Series line was introduced last April and billed as the “most accessible form of McLaren ownership” with a starting price of 126,000 pounds (USD184,000) in the UK.
McLaren said it has 1,200 orders for the 570S and 540C two-seat Sport Series, representing six months’ of production. Of the new jobs, 200 will be created in production at the firm’s factory in Woking, southeast England. The rest will go into quality and logistics. McLaren Automotive currently employs about 1,000 people.
The second shift will start in February and will increase the production rate from 14 cars a day to 20 by mid-2016, the company said.
