You’ve heard of Nickel Cadmium batteries and even Lithium-Ion batteries, but now scientists are experimenting with lithium oxygen to come up with extremely high capacity power packs. The new battery formulation is aimed at extended the range of electric vehicles. The good people at the University of Cambridge are struggling to find a breakthrough but are confident that once the technology of these new ‘Lithium Air’ batteries takes off, they will not only have a higher energy density than lithium ion batteries but also be cheaper and as much one-fifth the weight of conventional batteries.
Experts believe that theoretically such a battery would have an efficiency rate of up to 93% and be good for approximately 2000 chargers. The bad news though is that its about 10 years away.
