Google is getting a little more serious about its role in the automotive industry. Just recently, the company patented car-to-car communications technology, which would without a doubt make driving lot safer, not just for autonomous vehicles.
The patent shows a system with the following components on each car: an antenna at the rear, a front-mounted camera and radar transmitter. As soon as a safety hazard is detected on the road ahead, the system records the size, distance and velocity of whatever’s in the way. That information is fed to other cars with the system, allowing drivers in vehicles with no line of sight to at least get fed information about a potential hazard.
In theory, this would allow for communication between drivers without any words being spoken
