On the 28th of August 1937, Kiichiro Toyoda spunoff the Toyota Motor Corporation from his father’s company, Toyota Industries. So while the company’s first car was produced before its own inception, it is technically Toyota’s 78th birthday today!
In 1972 Toyota built its millionth vehicle, and three years later it surpassed Volkswagen to become America’s favourite import brand. The list of achievements go on, with its greatest claim to fame coming in 2008, where amidst a global economic slowdown, it stole the crown from General Motors to become the world’s largest automaker.
The company has come a long, long way since its inception 78 years ago, and as the largest listed company by both revenue and market capitalization, things can only get better for the carmaker.
