There’s a lot of hype surrounding the all-new 7-Series and not just because of the insane tech that goes inside. This is a car with a heritage, and where a model has a strong historical significance, certain iconic design cues carry over over each generation.
OK, maybe that’s a bit unrealistic to expect of the 7-Series, but this is still a BMW, which means that the standard BMW trademarks retain themselves throughout. There’s the same old dual headlights and a Hofmeister kink on the rear windows with every 7-Series.
The real star of this video though is the signature kidney grilles. They start off so understated and narrow on the original E23 and they just get larger and larger. Looking at the horizontal proportions, the latest 7-series has roughly 50% of its front end dominated by the kidney grille.
Whether or not the new oversized grilles excites you, it does make you wonder how long BMW can keep pushing in this direction, sooner or later there’s going to be tiny headlights at the edge and nothing but grille at the front!
