Toyota’s eight-generation Hilux pickup has arrived in Thailand today. The previous seventh generation Hilux had a good 11-year run with numerous facelifts and upgrades and still managed to retain the No.1 selling position despite being challenged by the Ranger, Triton, Colorado, BT50, D-MAX and Navara.
This all new Hilux gets a new diesel engine family under the GD engine series. The two new 4-cylinder diesel engines offer more low-end torque and efficiency rather than outright power when compared to its predecessors. The 2.4-litre version produces 150hp and 400Nm, while the 2.8-litre variant generates a healthy 177hp and an impressive 420Nm (450Nm with automatic transmission).
Fuel consumption is improved by as much a 10% with the use of a 5-speed automtci gearbox and the use of a ignition automatic stop/start system. Toyota says the chassis has been stiffened up by 20%, while the wider dimensions of the vehicle help for increased grip and better cornering ability. This Hilux has an overall length of 5,330mm (up by 90mm), width of 1,855mm (up by 20mm), height of 1,815mm (up by 5mm) and an unchanged wheelbase of 3,085mm.
The front end of the Hilux carries projector-type head lamps with LED daytime-running lights and new slimmer grille and headlamps.
The cabin carries a more car-like ambience with a 4.2-inch multi-information display, 7-inch touch-screen to operate the audio and navigation systems and a steering wheel that adjusts for both reach and height.
This Hilux is slated to arrive in Malaysia later this year, meanwhile, Mitsubishi will be launching the all new Triton in 2 weeks time with showrooms already taking bookings nationwide and Ford has a facelifted Ranger coming to town soon.
