Formula Masters China Series, China and Asia’s leading international junior single-seater series, has announced plans for its third season in 2015, which will see the championship race at six different race circuits in four different countries.
Established by Volkswagen Group China in 2012, FMCS was created specifically to provide young drivers with a strong motor racing foundation to prepare them for a career in the sport. The FMCS platform is designed to offer fledging talents plenty of track time across a variety of the region’s premier circuits, while strict and equitable regulations ensure that it is talent and not financial advantage that shines.
Heading into just its third season, FMCS has already proven to be a successful platform with many of its drivers graduating to more advanced formula series in Europe, or moving into sportscars within the Volkswagen Group China motorsport family. Current FMCS champion James Munro (17) of New Zealand, runner-up Matthew Solomon (18) of Hong Kong and Briton Dan Wells (23), third overall, all intend to move to Formula 3 for the 2015 season, while 2014 FMCS Best Chinese Driver Trophy winner Yuan Bo made his LMP2 debut in the Asian Le Mans Series earlier this month, winning the season finale at the Sepang International Circuit alongside team mates Ho-Pin Tung and David Cheng. Last season, 2013 champion Aidan Wright competes in the Audi R8 LMS Cup, along with Solomon, and 2013 runner-up Afiq Yazid raced in the Lamborghini Super Trofeo Asia. FMCS driver Bao Jin Long also contested the Porsche Carrera Cup Asia in 2014.
For the 2015 season, FMCS expects to welcome new and returning teams and up to 20 of China and the region’s brightest young talents for what is already shaping up to be a groundbreaking season.
The 2015 season will get underway at the Sepang International Circuit with three races on Malaysia’s Formula 1 track from April 24-26. The series continues a month later with its Indonesian debut at the Sentul International Circuit and Races 4-6 from May 22-24.
FMCS marks another milestone when it travels to Japan for the first time to race at the Fuji International Speedway for Races 7-9 in support of Super Taikyu from July 3-5. As the reputation of FMCS continues to strengthen, attracting top talents from not only China and Asia but also further afield, the series is committed to providing new opportunities for its drivers to gain experience across a wide variety of circuits.
In August, FMCS returns to Malaysia, this time for a street race in downtown Kuala Lumpur, another first for the series. The three races, from August 7-9, will give the FMCS drivers a valuable opportunity to experience the unique challenges of a street circuit.
As the championship heats up, FMCS returns to its home base in China where Races 13-15 will be held at the Zhuhai International Circuit as part of the Pan Delta Racing Festival from September 18-20. The triple-header season finale will, for the third year running, take place at the Sports Car Champions Festival at China’s Formula 1 track, the Shanghai International Circuit. With many of the Volkswagen Group China motorsport series also racing in Shanghai from October 16-18, the final three races of the season provide FMCS drivers with a platform to showcase their speed, skill and talent and an opportunity to further their motorsport careers.
