1972, the Royal Oak (RO) is introduced.  1993, the Royal Oak Offshore (ROO) is born, followed by its many variants and limited editions which eventually gained a bit of a cult following with AP fans.  2010, an even more dramatic interpretation of the ROO appeared in the form of the first Royal Oak Offshore Tourbillon Chronograph, featuring a hand-wound movement and a case incorporating forged carbon and ceramic.

Today, the latest AP ROO Offshore Tourbillon Chronograph is back in forged carbon with the automatic mechanical AP caliber 2897 . The inner tachy scale is a sapphire ring is new, as is the open movement architecture at 1 o’clock, exposed through the “Méga Tapisserie” dial; the chrono subs at 3 and 9 do look a bit small, or is it just me. Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore Selfwinding Tourbillon Chronograph 44mm x 14mm forged carbon case, black ceramic bezel/crown/pushers, titanium pushpiece guards, automatic mechanical AP caliber 2897 (tourbillon, column-wheel chronograph, 3Hz/21,600vph, platinum rotor),on black rubber strap with titanium pin buckle black dial with “Méga Tapisserie” pattern, black counters, gold applied hour-markers and gold Royal Oak hands with luminescent coating; sapphire inner ring hours and minutes / small seconds (9 o’clock) / central chronograph seconds hand, 30-minute counter (3 o’clock). Finishing: all parts finely hand decorated; bridges and mainplate rhodiumed, circular-grained, beadblasted and hand-drawn with file strokes; polished angles, bevelled screw rims and slots, Peripheral oscillating weight in circular satin-brushed 950 platinum. Price at around USD290,000.00 this is a real collectors edition.
