A latest report coming in says that Porsche is planning a horizontally opposed 4-cylinder engine range starting from as small as 1.6-liter. Insiders says that the new engines are already on the drawing board and as expected these new engines will be more fuel-efficient and cut CO2 emissions by almost 30%.
It is not all bad news for Porsche boxes fans as the good news is that the new engines will keep a genetic link to the iconic flat-six engines used by the Porsche 911 for decades. Porsche is already using a new V4 engine on the new 919 Hybrid Le Man race car.
The 1.6-liter flat four engine is expected to deliver 210 hp, while the 2.0-liter flat four will develop 286 hp and 400 Nm. The most powerful engine will be the 2.5-liter flat four, which delivers around 360 hp and up to 470 Nm of torque. The first vehicles expected to get the first flat four engines are the all new Boxster, Cayman and the next generation Cayenne SUV. The engines will be offered with a 6-speed manual transmission or a 7-speed dual-clutch PDK.
