The class-defining Ford Ranger is setting new standards in safety, with the full Ranger line-up in Malaysia now equipped with additional active and passive safety features that will help keep both drivers and their passengers safe and firmly in control. The enhanced safety features include Ford’s Electronic Stability Program (ESP) across all variants and ISOFIX mounts for child seats in the Wildtrak, as well as all XLT and XL Double Cab variants.
“Safety is a top priority with every Ford vehicle we develop,” said David Westerman, managing director, Malaysia and Asia Pacific Emerging Markets, Ford Motor Company.
“With these upgrades, the Ranger has added to its credentials as the safest pickup truck in the market,” added Westerman.
The segment-leading Ranger continues to be Ford’s best-selling model in Malaysia and one of the country’s most popular pickup trucks – year-to-date retail sales through May this year have jumped 39 percent. With availability nationwide across the entire line-up, Ford is able to meet the extraordinary demand for the Ranger in Malaysia.
Active improvements to driver control
Previously found only in the Ford Ranger 3.2L Wildtrak, ESP is now a standard safety feature in all Ranger variants in Malaysia. ESP is an active safety system that improves driver control under all conditions and maximises vehicle traction and stability both on- and off-road. It uses advanced sensors to continuously monitor the path the vehicle is travelling on. When ESP senses that the vehicle is turning more (oversteering) or less (understeering) than the driver intends, the system automatically reduces engine torque and/or applies a braking force to individual wheels to stabilise the vehicle and help it maintain the correct path.
This is particularly useful when roads are slippery, when the driver has to make a sudden lane change to avoid an accident, or where there is inadequate grip or vehicle speed when cornering. The ESP monitors the vehicle’s direction against the driver’s intentions 25 times per second and can react very quickly when needed. Within physical limits, the car remains safely on track.
Enhanced driver, passenger and pedestrian safety
The Ranger XL variants now come standard with an Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS). Gravel Road Logic further improves stopping distances on loose surfaces, which are common in countries with a lot of unsealed roads. The electronic brake force distribution maximises brake force used on the rear wheels as payload changes while maintaining optimal stability. Ford has also added more passive safety features across its entire family of Rangers in Malaysia.
“With these upgrades, the best certainly just got better. Combined with the Ranger’s unmatched versatility, capability and comfort, Malaysian drivers now have even more reasons to choose a Ford,” said Westerman.
Wildtrak as well as all XLT and XL Double Cab Ranger models are now equipped with ISOFIX mounting points for child seats. Ford has also added three-point safety belts for the rear centre seat and rear centre head restraints in these variants for added comfort and safety.
New frontal impact airbags for the driver and passenger – previously available only in the Ford Ranger XLT and Wildtrak variants – are now also included in the XL Single Cab and Double Cab variants. Additionally, all Ranger variants now feature the Ford BeltMinder technology – already standard in the Wildtrak variant – which reminds front-seat occupants to wear their belts with an audible ‘chime’.
The Ranger has also been engineered to include Ford’s proprietary pedestrian protection features. The upgraded versions of the XL and XLT variants now include a front bumper design that incorporates energy-absorbing materials, an existing feature in the Wildtrak. Other improvements that have been added to the Ranger XL Single Cab variant include a rear bumper and 16-inch steel wheels. Both the Single Cab and XL 4×2 Double Cab Lo-Rider variants are also now fitted with a radio and two speakers.
The Ford Ranger also offers class-leading towing, payload and water-wading capabilities. The interior of the Ranger brings new levels of spaciousness to the compact pickup ownership experience. Built with Ford’s global engineering expertise, it is fitted with smart technologies, including Bluetooth® with Voice Control connectivity and a Dual Zone Climate Control feature.
“The Ranger combines the safety and security systems of passenger cars with the ruggedness and dependability of a pickup truck, delivering a combination of features and performance that is unmatched in the market,” said Westerman.
