Last month when McLaren launched the 650S at the Geneva Motor Show, they made it clear that it is a third model in their line-up and not a replacement for the 12C. Few weeks passed and the 12C production was temporarily stopped due to the strong demand of 650S. The 650S is essentially 12C but with little more power, P1 inspired styling, improved handling and more features.
Now few weeks later, McLaren has decided to cease the 12C production in light of the success of 650S. Not a big surprise, but kind of cool how they are doing it, by offering a free Technology Upgrade available from June to all 12C owners.
The upgrade offers some of the advancements made to the 650S and includes new Active Aero software which will allow 12C’s existing Airbrake to ‘sense’ different driving scenarios with a DRS (Drag Reduction System) mode which lowers the wing when driving at speed in a straight line, improving high-speed aerodynamics. There are also improvements to the Android-based IRIS system and newer models with door buttons will further benefit from an external control to lower the windows.
In addition to free upgrade, McLaren is also offering the reversing camera and DAB radio, found on the 650S, with a special price. McLaren has big plans as they are also working on an entry level P13 with 450-500bhp and a new supercar to slot below the P1.
