First time participants, Erebus Racing, beat out the Series favourite for pole position when he clocked 2:18.651 during the second Qualifying session held today at Guia Circuit in Macau.
Maro Engel, driving the Mercedes SLS AMG GT3, beat Edoardo Mortara for the coveted pole position in a session that was marred by one red flagged session, 20 minutes into the Qualifying and a yellow flag at one of the sectors after the session restarted. Alexandre Imperatori will line up in row two in the Porsche 911 GT3 R alongside Engel’s teammate, Renger Van der Zande in the second SLS.
Meanwhile, double GT Asia Series Champion, Mok Weng Sun, set the fastest time of the day ahead of his GT Asia Series competitors in his McLaren 12C GT3. Despite missing yesterday’s session due to a gearbox issue and having to wait for the parts to arrive from the UK last night, Mok and the Clearwater Racing team managed to replace the part to gain the advantage heading into the final race tomorrow.
Peter Li Zhi Cong shaved two seconds off his time from yesterday in the Porsche 911 GT3R after the Asia Racing Team crew fixed his faulty gearbox. Third fastest of the GT Asia Series drivers in Samson Chan in the Ford GT3 found almost three seconds during his session today. Chan mentioned that he would have been able to improve further had the session not stopped, as he was in the middle of setting what would have been his best time.
Jeffrey Lee in the Audi R8 LMS could not improve his time and is fourth, ahead of his teammate, Philip Ma. Frank Yu only managed to improve his time slightly dropping him down to fifth in the Aston Martin Vantage GT3 with Ro Charlz sixth fastest in the Lamborghini LP560. Wayne Shen leads a foursome of Porsche 997 GT3 Cup 3.8’s, with Keith Vong, Francis Tjia and John Shen in seventh to tenth respectively.
Francis Hideki Onda in the Audi R8 LMS, Siu Yuk Lung in the Porsche 911 GT3R, Billy Fung in the Ferrari 458 Challenge, Jacky Yeung in the Lamborghini LP520 and Shim Ching in the Audi R8 LMS all made the qualification. Despite setting a time during the session yesterday, Tunku Hammam Sulong will not be able to compete in the race tomorrow after suffering from two incidents over the weekend. Young Thai driver Pasin Lathouras was also forced to pull out of the race after sustaining extensive damage to his Ferrari 458 Italia GT3 on his first timed lap during the earlier session.
