Last weekend the MRS team season’s finale of the Blancpain Endurance Series took place. At the 1,000 km race Nürburgring the MRS team started with a McLaren MP4-12C GT3. The work behind the steering wheel for the 6 hour race was shared by the Austrian Philipp Eng and the two Argentinean Mauro Giallombardo and Alejandro Gonzalez. In the field of the 50 strong engaged GT3 cars Philipp Eng could reach a good starting position in the 11th grid. Also there still was potential!
Until then the young Argentinean Mauro Giallombardo did an excellent job, as his countryman Alejandro Gonzalez. Both were for the first time at Nürburgring and both were sitting the first time behind the steering wheel of the British sports car. For that a tight gap of only one second in the case of Giallombardo on Eng could absolutely put in an appearance.
On dry conditions Philipp Eng started the 1.000 km race on the MRS McLaren and until his pit stop after circa 65 minutes he could move forward to the third position of his class and a very good 16th position overall. At the pit stop Alejandro Gonzalez took over the cockpit and drove an error-free race. Just at the end of his stint while fighting for positions in the Pro-Am class it came to an incident in the Dunlop turn. “A Ferrari wanted to pass very hard on the inside, I even gave him more room to avoid a contact”, said a disappointed Alejandro Gonzalez.
However it happened; the Ferrari hit the MRS McLaren very hard on the suspension, so that Gonzalez stranded into the gravel. Because a repair was not possible on track, the race for the MRS team already ended after around two hours.
The next race where the MRS team will participate with the McLaren GT3 is the FIA GT3 World Challenge in Baku (Azerbaijan). Because there are some delays on the construction of the city circuit, the date is still not fixed. Apparently the race will take place at the end of November.
