Yamaha are keeping their FJR1300 sports tourer in demand with chassis and engine upgrades and an electronics package that includes ride-by-wire, traction control, cruise control and ABS. This 2013 FJR1300 is said to be more comfortable, practical and has better all-round performance. It’s not a huge leap forward from the old bike and the tall overdrive 5th gear is still there, but it’s still a hugely capable machine.
A new twin-spark head, revised fuel injection system and detail changes to reduce internal pumping losses doesn’t add any more power to the 146bhp inline four-cylinder engine, but torque is up 4.3fllb to 102ftb. There’s a new fuel-injection system and ride-by-wire throttle. The engine has plenty of power for all situations and the very tall fifth gear is good for cruising.
The chassis is more or less the same as previous model’s but the fully-adjustable forks are new. They have the spring in one leg and the dampers in the other, which reduces weight and improves their performance. Handling and brakes are very good and places the FJR1300 at the sportier end of the sports touring scale. A roomy riding position, comfy seat and adjustable screen ensure a pleasurable ride for miles on end. A 25-litre fuel tank will ensure over 200-miles between fill-ups. New for this model is a revised electric screen, cruise control, traction control, switchgear and a three-part dash display.
