Audi began volume production of the A6 hybrid in early 2012. Designed as a parallel hybrid, it produces a combined total of 245hp of system output and 480Nm of system torque. Its combustion engine, a 2.0 TFSI with 211hp and 350Nm of torque, works together with an electric motor producing 54hp and 210Nm of torque. The electric motor sits directly behind the TFSI and in front of the modified 8-speed tiptronic. The transmission delivers the power to the front wheels.
The light and compact lithium-ion battery has a nominal capacity of 1.3 kWh and delivers 40 kW of power. Two different methods are used to air cool the battery, depending on need: with air blown from the passenger compartment by a fan and via a separate cooling circuit coupled to the deluxe automatic air conditioning system. This technology keeps the battery within the suitable temperature window over a broad range, ensuring a relatively large proportion of electric driving.
The Audi A6 hybrid can drive at up to 100 km/h purely on electric power and has a range of 3 kilometers at a constant 60km/h. It can also drive using the combustion engine alone or in hybrid mode. The A6 hybrid recovers energy during braking and activates both power sources at the same time during strong acceleration. Special displays on the instrument cluster and the MMI monitor depict the various driving states.
The hybrid sedan accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.5 seconds and reaches a top speed of 240km/h. Standard fuel consumption is 6. liters per 100km.
Body and design The sedan is 4.92 meters long and 1.87 meters wide, but just 1.46 meters tall – the sportiest proportions in its class. The long engine hood, the low, taut roof line and the sharp lines create a dynamic overall impression. Up front, optional LED headlights underscore the distinctive appearance.
Thanks to an intelligent composite construction concept, the body is extremely lightweight, rigid and safe. The numerous aluminum components and the high-tech steels are the backbone of Audi’s consistent ultra-lightweight design concept and lower the body’s weight. Depending on the version, the business sedan weighs up to 80 kilograms less than the previous model. The A6 2.0 TFSI has a curb weight of just 1,540 kg.
Interior The spacious interior of the Audi A6 takes up the sinewy style of the exterior design. Its most striking element is an inlay that surrounds the driver and front passenger, known as the “wrap-around.” The elegant face of the instrument panel emphasizes the tension of the cockpit.
Every interior detail documents the care with which Audi builds cars. All materials, including a layered-wood veneer, have been selected and crafted with the utmost care. The front seats are available with optional ventilation and massage functions.
The Audi A6 features the intuitive ergonomics concept that characterizes all of the brand’s models. An efficient deluxe automatic air conditioning system and the MMI radio advanced control system come standard. Options include MMI navigation plus with MMI touch and a head-up display that projects the most important information onto the windshield.
Chassis The chassis of the A6 combines superior comfort with sporty precision. Its suspension components are made of aluminum; the power steering features an electromechanical drive for high efficiency.
Equipment and trim The top-end navigation system, MMI navigation plus with pioneering touchpad control, works closely together with the optional driver assistance and safety systems in the A6. It forwards the route data to the control units for the headlights, the automatic transmission and the adaptive cruise control with stop & go function. This enables these systems to recognize complex scenarios and support the driver.
The Bluetooth car phone online supplements MMI navigation plus to connect the A6 to the Internet.
The Euro NCAP consortium has awarded the new Audi A6 the maximum five-star rating for passive crash safety.
The results for adult occupant protection in a frontal or side collision and the child safety and pedestrian protection place the new Audi A6 among the safest cars in its class. The demanding test requirements of the Euro NCAP far exceed the standards of European lawmakers.
The scores awarded by the testers to the A6 for driver and passenger protection in frontal and side impact collisions easily earned the car the top rating of five stars. Children are also well protected in the new Audi A6. But ensuring protection for pedestrians and cyclists is also an important concern for Audi. A vehicle front end specially designed for this requirement helps to mitigate the consequences of a collision. The Audi A6 earned similarly good results in the Euro NCAP test.
In addition to the elements evaluated by the institution, Audi also gives top priority to integral safety as well as active safety. For this reason the Audi A6 offers an integral pedestrian protection system with standard daytime running lights and optional night vision assistant with a pedestrian warning. Additional driver assistance systems include Audi active lane assist or the all-weather light with adaptive headlight range control.
The Audi pre sense system is a milestone in active safety. In situations where a collision is likely, the “Audi pre sense plus” system initiates partial braking. If a collision is unavoidable, the partial braking is followed by a full deceleration that reduces the intensity of the impact. Target braking assists drivers in situations where they do not apply sufficient braking force despite having received visual and acoustic warnings.
