Honda has sold 1 million hybrid cars globally as of last week. Honda achieved this milestone after having offered the hybrid globally for 12 years and 11 months. The first original Insight was sold in Japan in 1999. Honda has presented the following hybrids in the U.S. , the Civic Hybrid, original six-cylinder Accord Hybrid, CR-Z, and the Acura ILX Hybrid. Even as the original Honda Insight arrived shorter than one year after the first-generation Toyota Prius came to Japan, it actually beat the Prius to the market in the U.S. Nevertheless, Toyota has long exceeded the 1-million mark for its hybrids. As of May 2012, Toyota has sold 4 million hybrid vehicles worldwide. Honda’s total hybrid sales even fall behind the sales of the Prius lineup. It was last April that Toyota sold its one-millionth Prius in the U.S. As of October 2010, Toyota has sold more than 2 million Prius units. But Honda isn’t giving up the fight. In the next two years, Honda will release a new generation of hybrids. Next year, the new Accord will be available as a plug-in hybrid variant and a traditional hybrid will follow. In the next several years, Acura may introduce three new all-wheel-drive hybrids the four-door RLX hybrid sedan, the revived Acura NSX, and maybe an MDX hybrid crossover.
