Ford’s sub-compact Fiesta for 2014 will be powered by a new ultra-efficient gasoline engine that will offer a fuel economy rating that’s higher than a lot of hybrids. This new engine is a 1.0-liter 3-cylinder EcoBoost powerplant that uses both turbocharging and direct-injection to deliver 123-hp and return up to 49-mpg. The problem is that this engine felt and sounded like a diesel. Nevertheless, if it offers that much performance and fuel economy in the Focus, it would be even better in the tiny Fiesta. Ford uses EcoBoost technology to provide top fuel economy while at the same time, it is making preparations to use it to offer a performance Fiesta. A Fiesta ST hot hatch has been confirmed to already be in development. Ford is looking for other ways to boost the fuel economy of its products, says Automotive News. One of those being considered is the 1.0L EcoBoost engine.
