Alfa Romeo is set to launch its new Giulia saloon in 2014 and they are gunning for the BMW 3-Series sales pie. This new Giulia will show how determined Fiat’s Group chief Sergio Marchionne is about rescuing the brand. The Giulia would be the first all-new mainstream model to be launched under the revival plan of Alfa. The saloon, as well as the mid-engined 4C sports car (which will start selling in early 2014) and the reborn Spider (due in 2015), is meant to return Alfa Romeo to its position as a viable worldwide premium brand. The front-drive Giulia (which is the internal name but is still tentative) will be presented first as a saloon. A Sportswagon will follow next.
Aside from this familiar unit, the Giulia will be offered with an array of new turbocharged petrol engines that are exclusive to the Alfa brand. These include an upgraded variant of the impressive 1750 TBi unit found in the discontinued 159 and Brera, as well as the diesel powertrains of Fiat.
In a recent interview, Marchionne said that in the future, Alfa will get a line-up of engines that Fiat-branded cars don’t use. Any dispute in the future is deemed unlikely with Fiat seemingly being cut down to a core lineup of Panda and 500-series vehicles. Furthermore, the Giulia will be using a new MultiAir variant of Chrysler’s latest Pentastar petrol V6. Look out for more excitement coming to all Sime Darby AutoConnexion showrooms.
