When you build a car for the global marketplace, it’s given name is very important. Proton has given its new sedan the name Prevé (pronounced Prae-vae), which in French means ‘to prove’ and in Spanish it means ‘to envision’. There will a lot of Malaysians and maybe even foreigners who will have their 2 cents to say and comment about this name, but with any global product, the name has to suit all intended markets and not just one market (Malaysia). We suppose Proton wants ‘to prove’ to the Malaysian public that the Prevé will be a global car capable of matching the best in its segment and Proton management ‘envision’ success for the Prevé. Using the engines and gearboxes found in the Exora MPV, the Prevé will have adequate power and torque to handle all roads. A full test drive review will be coming soon.
Proton has been working on this global car for some 2 years. Using a shortened Exora MPV platform, the Prevé carries with it’s the capability and flexibility of having 2 engine variants.
In the development of the Prevé, Proton engineers took the segment best sellers from Europe and Korea to compare. This is why the Prevé which is priced from RM62,000 (for the manual version) to RM74,000(for the auto with paddle shift gearbox) comes with 4 airbags, full passive and active safety features, best in class legroom, elbowroom, rear luggage capacity and fuel efficiency.
No other product in its segment can compete in its size and features. The base model will get the popular IAFM+ engine which will be sold with a choice of a 5-speed manual and or a CVT gearbox. The top model (High-Line) will get the turbocharged engine which is currently used in the Exora Bold MPV. The High-Line Proton Prevé will get a 7-speed gearbox with paddle shifters. The nearest competitors are cars like the new Hyundai Elantra and the soon to be launched Ford Focus.
