DRB-HICOM Berhad together with Volkswagen officially unveiled the first locally-assembled Volkswagen Passat, a significant milestone that further signifies DRB-HICOM’s commitment to its completely knocked-down (CKD) operations for the production of Volkswagen vehicles for the local market. The car is the first Volkswagen product to be locally assembled and is the result of a collaboration agreement that was signed by Volkswagen AG and DRB-HICOM Berhad in December 2010.
Carrying a price tag of RM170,888, the locally assembled Volkswagen Passat is similar in specifications as its imported versions which was priced at RM184,888 and carries the same quality standards of Volkswagen’s stringent quality controls. They are available through all 18 Volkswagen dealerships nationwide immediately. Will this move affect the used values of the imported Passat’s? We don’t think so as an imported car is still preferred by certain customers.
Member of the Board of Management of Volkswagen in China and Head of Commercial Operations China/Asean, Mr Weiming Soh said, “I would like to thank the Prime Minister for unveiling the first locally-assembled Volkswagen here today. We are truly honoured especially when Malaysia played a very crucial role in our strategy in the region,” he added. “The locally-assembled Passat is a sophisticated top-of-the-line sedan that promises on Volkswagen’s commitment of providing affordable prices to Malaysians,” Soh added. This pricing will put the leading Japanese and Korean executive sedans in a different light with segment buyers from now on.
