Honda has got a new 120-hp 1.6-liter diesel engine in its stable ready to rock the diesel segment in Europe. This new engine is expected to pose a real threat especially the current diesel leader Volkswagen. For its engine benchmarks, Honda used comparable Volkswagen Group diesel powertrains to obtain the class best results. Honda’s new diesel engine has an output of 300Nm of torque while boasting CO2 emissions of less than 100 grams per kilometer of CO2. With a weight of 180kg, this new diesel engine is the lightest in its class. In turn, this offers low CO2 numbers. All this sounds great and exciting but unfortunately this diesel engine will not be introduced in Malaysia due to the lack of proper diesel fuel in Malaysian pumps.
Honda engineer Junji Yamano said that this new powerplant was specifically designed to compete with VW’s engine. Honda’s factory in Swindon, England, will be producing the engine. This engine is expected to make its debut in autumn 2012 at the Paris auto show. The new ninth-generation Civic is where this engine will first be used when it comes out in early 2013. This engine options include a 1.4- and 1.8-liter petrol engines and a 2.2-liter diesel unit. Only the 2.2-liter unit is offered on the current Civic in Europe.
