Christian Menzel of Team StarChase completed his domination of the Porsche SC Global Carrera Cup Asia – Singapore 2011 last weekened taking his second victory of the weekend on the Marina Bay street circuit. The 12-lap race was again interrupted by a brief Safety Car period, but the German held his nerve to lead from pole to chequered flag. Another substitute driver, SC Global Racing’s Craig Baird, collected his second runner-up finish of the weekend, unable to catch Menzel despite his best efforts. LKM Racing’s Keita Sawa took the final podium spot and leapt to the top of the championship leaderboard. The Japanese ace now holds a one point advantage over Team Jebsen’s Rodolfo Avila of Macau, who finished fifth behind Sawa’s team mate Darryl O’Young, as the series looks forward to its two-race grand finale in Shanghai next month.
With O’Young on FIA World Touring Car Championship duty next month, the battle for the 2011 Porsche Carrera Cup Asia championship going in to the final two races is between Sawa, Avila, and StarChase regular Alexandre Imperatori. Winner of the Class B category was Pauian Archiland Absolute Racing’s Jeffrey Lee, completing his strongest-ever Porsche Carrera Cup Asia weekend with a pair of well-deserved victories. OpenRoad Racing’s Francis Tjia continued his strong season with second, followed across the line by Class B championship leader, Team BetterLife’s Wang Jian Wei of China.
In the race for the Class B crown, Wang now holds a 30-point advantage over nearest challenger Ringo Chong, but with a maximum of 41 points on offer, there’s still everything to race for in Shanghai with Tjia still in with a shot at the title. With the successful conclusion of the Porsche SC Global Carrera Cup Asia – Singapore 2011 at the 2011 FORMULA 1 SINGTEL SINGAPORE GRAND PRIX, the series now readies for what promises to be a spectacular double header at the season finale at the Shanghai International Circuit from October 21-23.
