We get a 1st taste of VW’s latest GTI around the Sepang circuit. Not the best place to test drive a new car for a proper report but a quick feel of this baby Golf. We head on to the first turn at Sepang and we were already totally impressed with the way this new Polo GTi connected with the tarmac as we flew around the corners at speeds with our stomachs churning as the G-forces acted heavily on our breakfast. This all new Polo GTi has sensational handling and awesome feedback via its well weighted steering and taut chassis set-up. There is loads of fun to be had here at a fraction of the cost of many cars boasting a sport badge at a much higher price. It reminded us of the 1st generation Golf GTi from 30 years ago, the Mk1 Golf. Light, nimble and responsive. Lacking only the top end speed of past 200km/h which sadly a small capacity 1.4-liter engine will have difficulty reaching despite two forced induction units working in harmony.
The sweet 1.4-litre TFSI engine pokes out a surprising 180 brake horsepower and 250Nm of torque to provide true sports performance. Always ready to respond, the engine spins extremely freely at every command. The 17-inch alloy wheels have been borrowed from the previous Golf GTi and works well to mask the Polo’s slightly slimmer size.
Inside, the Polo GTi’s cabin is a complete small car sports package with a very uplifting, stylish, functional sporty and active appearance borrowed from the latest Golf GTi. Acceleration is always brisk, easily embarrassing bigger capacity engines. The 0-100 km/h sprint is performed in well under seven seconds, and despite its performance this Polo will be your friend at the petrol station as the average fuel consumption is just 6.1 litres/100 km.
Priced from RM132,888.00, the Polo GTi is inexpensive to purchase and an easy to run hot hatch for drivers looking to move up from Japanese hot hatches. It also makes for the supercar owner to have a quick and nippy point to point easy to park unassuming transport machine that will return more smiles per mile than any other price competitor.
