Remember the Golf R400 concept which was shown at the Beijing Motor Show? Well this high performance hot hatchback has been confirmed to go into production and the showroom ready model will be unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show next year. We suppose VW product managers have seen the runaway success of the Mercedes A45 AMG and decided that their ‘R’ will not be sufficient to take away sales from the A45 AMG and so this sizzling Golf will have o be produced. Production will be very limited and will have many limited edition features never before included into a Golf.
The production version will retain the sporty appearance, with body and bumper modifications and flared wheel arches. The body will be 20mm wider on each side, with flared wheel arches that are reminiscent of those on the 1988 Rallye Golf G60.
At the front of this Golf, the bumper will be completely redesigned to take into account the greater cooling requirements of the R400. Volkswagen will use a lot of carbon fiber to retain the lighweight only 1420 kilograms of the concept car.
The Golf R400 will be powered by a modified version of the engine found in the Golf R: a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged engine with 400hp and an extra 70Nm of torque compared to the standard Golf R, making for 450 Nm in total, available from 2400 to 6000 rpm.
More details of this car will be revealed closer to date.
